Summer CSAs: The Real Farm-to-Table Experience

If you've ever wanted to eat like a local, taste what "fresh" actually means, or simply feel more connected to the land that surrounds this beautiful community, a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) box subscription might just change your relationship with food forever.
What is a CSA and Why Does it Matter in Delta?
A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program is one of the most direct ways to support local farmers. You purchase a "share" of a farm's harvest upfront, usually weekly or bi-weekly, and in return, you receive a box of seasonal, farm-fresh produce throughout the growing season. No middlemen, no grocery store markups, no produce that's been sitting in a distribution warehouse for a week.
For Deltans, CSA fresh boxes are far from a feel-good food trend. It's a lifeline for our local farming families who have been working this land for generations. Agricultural land in the Lower Mainland is under enormous pressure from development and rising costs. When you subscribe to a CSA, you're not just getting great food; you're casting a vote in favour of farmland that feeds our entire region.
The Bridge Situation: What You Need to Know Before You Go
If you're planning to visit farms on Westham Island this season, there's something important to know first: the Westham Island Bridge has been a significant challenge. The historic one-lane wooden bridge, which serves as the only road access to the island, has faced closures and weight restrictions that have meaningfully impacted farmers' ability to move equipment, receive supplies, and welcome visitors.
For farms on Westham Island, this is more than an inconvenience. It affects deliveries, complicates harvest logistics, and can make on-farm CSA pickup difficult during certain periods. The workarounds local farms are using include:
• Off-island pickup locations — several Westham Island farms have set up CSA collection points
• Delivery options — some farms are offering local delivery to Delta addresses
• Partnering with community hubs — local businesses and Earthwise Society have helped bridge the gap (no pun intended).
Local Farms: CSA Boxes
Cropthorne Farm, Westham Island
Cropthorne is one of Delta's most beloved organic farms and has been a cornerstone of the Westham Island farming community for decades. Their certified organic CSA boxes are a staple for many Delta families and offer a range of share sizes suitable for singles, couples, and families, with weekly and bi-weekly options throughout the summer and into fall. Think crisp salad greens, heirloom tomatoes, summer squash, fresh herbs, and whatever else is bursting out of the fields that week. 📍Summer CSA programs are now on sale
Westham Island Herb & Produce Farm
Westham Island Herb Farm has forced farms like this to get even more creative in how they connect with their customers, which in true Delta spirit, has deepened those relationships rather than broken them. They've made adjustments, rolling with the punches, like moving Spuddy Saturday off-island to Ladner's Memorial Park on Saturday, March 7th. 📍Harvest in the Box and CSA program variations
Schoolhouse Farm
Schoolhouse Farm brings a wonderful community spirit to the CSA model. With a focus on fresh, seasonal vegetables and a genuine connection to the families they serve, Schoolhouse offers a Farm
Membership with special buying privileges and farm perks worth discovering.
Earthwise Society
Earthwise Society is now open for their 2026 CSA season and registration is live. Their weekly boxes are filled with freshly harvested, sustainably grown produce from their Southlands farm on Boundary Bay, with an emphasis on variety: expect the basics like potatoes, salad mix, and root crops alongside unusual heirloom varieties you won't find at any grocery store.
The full 20-week season runs June through November at $500 total ($25/week), or jump in for a 10-week share at $300. Pickup is available at the Delta farm (6400 3rd Avenue, Tsawwassen) or in Agassiz.
How to Support Delta's Farms Beyond the CSA Box
A CSA subscription is a wonderful start, but there are so many ways to keep Delta's farming community thriving:
• Visit farm stands where you can shop directly, no subscription required
• Shop our local Farmers' Markets at Southlands and Ladner Village this summer
• Share on social media as a simple post about your CSA haul with a farm tag
• Volunteer, community farms like Earthwise Society rely on volunteer hours
• Advocate, showing up for local planning discussions and supporting ALR protection
• Be patient with the bridge — Westham Island farmers are dealing with a stressful infrastructure situation largely out of their hands. Flexibility from customers is genuinely appreciated. And always remember, if it was easy to get to, it wouldn't be so special!
