Cold Courage: Delta's New Year's Day Tradition

Every January 1st, hundreds of brave humans gather at Boundary Bay's Centennial Beach for Delta's annual Polar Bear Swim. This chilly tradition has been making waves in our community since the late 1970s when a small group of adventurous locals decided to welcome the new year with a refreshing dip in the frigid waters.

What makes Delta's swim unique in a sea of cold-plunging events across the Lower Mainland is its intimate community vibe and stunning locale. Boundary Bay's shallow, sheltered waters offer a gentler experience, making it more accessible for first-timers, families, and groups to dash in together, many setting their sights on ringing that distant bell on a buoy to mark their achievement. Of course, there's no pressure - a toe-tip may count in your books - you do you!

When you come as a bundled watcher or participant, be sure to soak the experience in. Many dunkers arrive in costumes, from Kracken to starfish, or simply fleece onesie pajamas for the perfect exit strategy. Local volunteers typically have hot chocolate and coffee on hand, while the Lion's Club food truck provides heartier options post-plunge.

For over four decades, this event has brought our community together, creating memorable moments and testing the mettle of Deltans. Whether you're taking the plunge or cheering from the shore, the Polar Bear Swim remains one of Delta's most cherished New Year's traditions. So, the question is, are you in?
