Ladner May Days: A Century-Long Celebration of Community Spirit

What began in 1896 as a modest school fair has blossomed into one of the longest-running community festivals in British Columbia - Ladner May Days. For 129 years, this cherished tradition has captured the heart of Delta residents, transforming Memorial Park into a celebration of local heritage, friendship, and fun.

In its earliest form, Ladner May Days was known for the crowning of the May Queen and the charming tradition of the May Pole Dance. These English customs were embraced by local settlers, establishing a celebratory rhythm that has echoed through generations. Over the decades, the event evolved, drawing on Ladner's close-knit community values and rich agricultural roots.

Celebration Through the Years

From humble beginnings, the festival quickly became a community mainstay. By the mid-20th century, Ladner May Days had expanded into a weekend-long affair, complete with parades, talent shows, and midway rides. Held on the Sunday of the May Days weekend - officially Sunday, May 25th, 2025 - the parade is a feast for the senses and a reflection of Delta’s inclusive and joyful spirit.

Children line the streets waving flags, while local dance troupes and musicians energize the crowds. Over the years, parade themes have ranged from “Back to the Future” to “Celebrate Community,” each one a canvas for creative expression and civic pride. This year, it's going musical with "Musical Icons of the Ages", a theme that is sure to be a blast, given it can take us from The Beatles and James Brown, to Adele and Taylor Swift.
